Now there are no shortage of family filled activities and fun to be had in the Quilpie Shire but we thought we’d compile the top 5 just to give you a little taste!
- Enjoy some high octane entertainment.
Plan your trip to the Quilpie Shire this School Holidays to coincide with the annual Quilpie Motorbike Gymkhana & Enduro on Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th September. Whether you want to compete or just spectate, a fun filled weekend awaits for the whole family!
- Explore Hell Hole Gorge National Park
Head north of Quilpie for a day or 2 and explore the hidden oasis that is Hell Hole Gorge National Park.
Head to the parks name sake, the Hell Hole waterhole for a picnic lunch or even set up camp for a few nights under the stars. Spend time walking the edges of Powell Creek, peering down the steep incised rock wall banks and be amazed at the large gum trees protruding from the water or venture to Spencer’s Waterhole, Hell Hole’s slightly smaller yet just as mighty Cousin.
For MUST KNOW information about Hell Hole Gorge before you travel and to book National Park camping permits, visit the Quilpie Information Centre.

- Don’t be scared….
When you visit in September you may get a scare….but don’t be afraid…it’s just the Show Society’s SCARECROW competition!
Quilpie’s annual Show & Rodeo was unfortunately cancelled like many other events but they have gone with a different format instead so that everyone can still enjoy the best parts of the Show such as the Pavilion exhibits or the hotly contested Scarecrow comp. You can meet the VIC’s scarecrow ‘Shiraz Shaz’ (above) along the main street. But don’t disturb…she’s in a VERY important Zoom meeting.
There will be fabulous displays around the town from Wool, patchwork and sewing, photography and much more and other categories will be going virtual via their Facebook page so make sure you ‘like’ it to stay up to date at https://www.facebook.com/quilpieshow
For more information on where to see all the displays pop in to the Visitor Information Centre.
- Stay cool
September means beautiful weather in the Quilpie Shire and with the lovely weather comes the long awaited season opening of the Quilpie swimming pool! There are always fantastic events and activities on throughout the school holidays so keep up to date by following their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/AAAQuilpie and the best part…the pool is free!
Some other great places to take a dip or even launch the canoe in the Quilpie Shire are the Lake, Kyabra waterhole and Hell Hole Gorge.
There are so many more fabulous family fun moments to be had in the Quilpie Shire, from wildlife spotting, opal fossicking, yabbying or simply enjoying the local street art. But we don’t want to give away all the secrets before you arrive. You’ll just have to come and visit and see it for yourself!
