Now we don’t want to appear like we are complaining about all the wonderful rain that we have been having here in Quilpie but when the river rises and goes down the sandflies become very friendly! And the flies well they are usually fairly friendly in the warmer months but here are some great ways to survive them when you are here.
- Long sleeve shirt
Although I guess technically a morph suit may be the best option to cover all your skin from the sand fly bite not all of us are Elle McPherson and could pull off that kind of look. So plan B! Head to the Visitor Information Centre and buy one of our long sleeve “Your Outback Adventure” Pilbara work shirts. We have a great range of sizes and colours for men, women and children.
2. Protect your face
Hand’s up if you’ve ever sampled the delicacy that is an Outback fly? Nothing worse than when you in the middle of telling a great yarn, you doing the ‘Aussie Wave’ constantly and then one of the sneaky little buggers flies straight into your gob! Now I don’t know about you but for me I can deal with the flies around my leg’s but not in my stomach.
To stop yourself having unwanted appetisers before lunch head to Elle’s Newsagency or even the Quilpie Hardware to pick up a trusty fly veil. These thing are the greatest invention (well we think so between October and March) since sliced bread.

3. Get a pot of gold!
Well it’s not technically gold but let me tell you it will do until we get some!
Nutrien Ag Solutions is the place to find the gold – Nature’s Botanical that is. A natural insect deterrent that has proven to be the best stuff for keeping away the persistent Quilpie flies and hungry sandflies. And not just that – it smells amazing. Rosemary & Cedar wood!
It comes in many sizes of cream, roll on and spray. Definitely a product to try.

4. A remedy as old as time
Who doesn’t love an old remedy? The best remedies usually come passed from generation to generation anyway. This one will keep those sand flies at bay.
If you head to one of the local supermarkets and pick up these ingredients:
1 bottle of Baby oil
1 bottle of Dettol
Using your funnel, add 1/3 equal parts of Dettol, baby oil and methylated spirits.
Now mix this all together and you can spray away (taking care to avoid open cuts or wounds, eyes and mouth)! And for all you pet owners this is how we in Quilpie keep our furry friends sand fly bite free!
This repellent is designed for external use only so don’t get any silly ideas. This mixture is also good for you pets.
Well there you have it! Some top tips for when you are in Quilpie! See you at the Visitor Information Centre when you purchase your shirt (wink, wink)!
