2020 has been a tough year everywhere, especially for small businesses so this year we’d love to see everyone supporting our local businesses and community and shopping local. and to make things easier we’ve compiled a few ways of just how you can do that this December!
- Shopping for the Kids
Let’s face it, Christmas is all about the kids and that huge toothy grin they get when they unwrap those presents they wrote to Santa about and that have now been mysteriously placed by the tree under the cover of darkness.
The best places to shop for the youngens in Quilpie is without a doubt Hewsonhall and Elle’s News. Both have an incredible range of toys in stock at the moment from Barbie to Wiggles, Paw Patrol to the ever popular Bluey all the big names are here.
And take it from me….if you plan on doing a little recon with the kids in tow, DON’T….they will want to take everything home.
- Shopping for the big kids (adults)
Quilpie’s local businesses don’t only cater for the kids though. For all you fella’s looking for something for a special lady maybe you should venture to the Chemist and check out the range of perfumes in store or the beautiful homewares at the post office – the wooden salad spoons are my personal fav. Courtney and Quilpie Country Collections also has a great range of ladies bags and Australian made soaps sure to impress the most fussy of recipient.
Shopping for the fellas then you can’t go past Elder’s or Nutrien with their range of car fridges, weed sprayers, pocket knives and not to mention the bargains you’ll find in their catalogues.
Now gardening might not be everyone’s favourite past time but a quick drive around town will tell you there are many keen gardeners (men & woman) in Quilpie so why not check out the range of pots and plants in store. Don’t miss the new range of bowls that have just hit the shelves! They won’t last long.
- Your Christmas feast necessities
Whether your family tends to do the more traditional of lunches or if you are like mine and like to have breakfast together, retreat to our air cons for the hottest part of the day and reconvene at someone’s place for the evening then the local stores have something for all menus.
Turkey, ham, chicken, beef or even local mutton – whatever you plan to feature on you plates this year you can’t go past the Quilpie Butchery – but make sure you get your orders in quick.
For the freshest prawns this side of Mooloolaba put an order in at Paulsen’s Foodstore. You can also pick up some great fresh vegies and fruit for all those delectable sides – and don’t forget the seafood sauce.
The festive season just wouldn’t be as festive without the nibbles and cocktails with friends and families and for the best range of cheeses, biscuits and all the other delectable you like to include on your platters, you can’t go past Meads Foodworks.
Now a cardinal sin would be to show up to someone’s house without a Cobb Loaf now wouldn’t it? Well make sure you get your order’s in to Offshears Bakery so you don’t ruin Christmas this year…..like my Cousin Jimbo did last year!
And let’s not forget those holiday cocktails we were talking about earlier. You’ll find all types of refreshing beverages at the Imperial Hotel, Quilpie Club or Eromanga Royal Hotel…and remember they won’t be open Christmas Day.
Does anyone else have that one person you just can’t find something for? Well you can’t go wrong with a local voucher.
Perhaps a bit of pampering with a new do from Helen’s Hair or Outback Hair Studio or one for the Old Empire Café, Elegant Emu or the Eromanga Café – where they can indulge in a cuppa and a slice of cake.
Or maybe you know a couple who would enjoy a night out without kids – spoil them with a voucher to the Heritage Inn, but remember you have to babysit.
And the best thing about a local voucher is that the money stays in town. How great is that.
- A taste of Quilpie for those far away family and friends
Now this one is pretty much vouchers but how about being a bit sneaky this year and buying your family some accommodation and tours so that they HAVE to come and visit….and they don’t have any excuses not to!
Some accommodation for their stay is a great start so why not a voucher for a few nights at the Channel Country Tourist Park, The Lake or the Quilpie Motor Inn. Or maybe a bit of secluded luxury with a stay at Moble Homestead.
Maybe you know some little people, or not so little, that are massive Dinosaur enthusiasts and a trip to the Eromanga Natural History Museum to meet ‘Cooper’, Australia’s largest dinosaur, might be right up their ally. Why not book a package then? Perfect gift!
2020 has been a tough year with family and friends overseas not being able to see each other for the holidays so why not send them a little souvenir from Quilpie. The Visitor Information Centre has a great range in store with our embroidered Pilbara’s a definite favourite.
- Shop handmade
Is there anything better than receiving a handmade gift. Just knowing someone has put so much love and care into creating that special item is true Christmas Spirit!
To shop some really unique locally handmade items make sure you checkout Christmas in the Gallery at the Quilpie Shire Gallery. From jewellery to clothes, quality linen items, Christmas ornaments, relishes, Christmas Cakes and so much more there is something here for everyone.
- Enjoy some Late night shopping
On Friday 4th December get in to the Christmas Spirit with a night of late night shopping in down town Quilpie. Things kick off at 6pm at the Quilpie Hardware before moving to Brolga Street from 6:30pm with the main Street businesses open until 8pm.
Food and beverages will be available from the Imperial Hotel and the Old Empire Café plus the Heritage Inn will be having a family BBQ and the lighting of their Christmas tree as part of the event.
Bring your community spirit and join in this fun filled family evening by supporting those local businesses that support your schools, clubs and organisations through the year. You could also be the lucky winner of a $100 local shop voucher just for shopping.

- Buy local to win
The Quilpie Shire Council is once again running their Buy Local Campaign. To be in the draw to win $2000 worth of vouchers for local businesses, all you have to do is simply Shop Local this festive season.
Spend $20 or more in one of the 20 plus businesses throughout the Shire that are participating, pop your name on your receipt and stick it in the box. It’s as easy as that!
Then join in the fun at the Quilpie community and Business Development Group Christmas Street Party on Friday the 18th December where the lucky winners of the Buy Local campaign will be drawn.
They say that when you buy from a small businesses an actual person does a happy dance. So why not shop local this year and make our local businesses dance the year away.
